The 35-year-old Syrian Achmet Al Zoueid remains missing following the stabbing attack that took place last Saturday against his wife, 38, and his mother-in-law, 58, inside their home in Strovolos. According to Philenews, the wife of the wanted man had the "ELPIS" application installed on her mobile phone — a digital tool designed for victims or potential victims of domestic violence — but did not manage to press the red emergency button.
Al Zoueid has been wanted since last February for a previous domestic violence case and has not been located. Authorities had recognised his wife as a victim of domestic abuse, which led to the installation of the "ELPIS" application on her phone. It is possible that the perpetrator caught her by surprise before she had a chance to seek help, or that he knew his wife had the application and took her phone away from her.
The condition of both injured persons is considered serious, however they are out of danger. Both are hospitalised under police guard at Nicosia General Hospital. So far they have not given detailed statements, with the result that the exact timeline of the attack and the likely location of the perpetrator's escape remain unclear.
Investigators from the Nicosia CID continue and extend their search across multiple areas where the 35-year-old may be hiding, who is considered dangerous. Police patrols carry a photograph of the wanted man and are systematically searching locations where he may have fled. In parallel, the Bicommunal Committee has been informed of the case so that, if he is found in the occupied areas, he will be handed over to the authorities of the Republic.
From the statements of the two victims, it is expected to clarify the circumstances of the attack, the perpetrator's motives, and the reason why the "ELPIS" application was not activated in time.
