A violent confrontation between dozens of inmates broke out at Central Prison on Sunday, resulting in several people being injured and the mobilisation of correctional officers from other wings to restore order.
According to reports, inmates from different factions clashed violently for reasons that remain unknown at this time. Those involved used batons, knives and other weapons of assault. The confrontation resulted in injuries, though no further details have been released regarding the number or severity of injuries.
On Monday morning, correctional authorities conducted a search of cells in the wing, during which several sharp objects were found and seized.
Following the incidents, all inmates in the wing were placed under cell restriction in their cells, pending the prison administration's decision on next steps.
The issue of prison understaffing has come to the fore again. Sources stated that it was impossible for two or three correctional officers per wing to maintain order.
