Police in Limassol have arrested a 19-year-old who is alleged to have been involved in an incident that caused minor injury to a member of the force during a pursuit on 9 July.

Everything began at approximately 4:30 in the afternoon, when a traffic officer from Z-unit attempted to stop a double-cabin vehicle without registration plates for inspection. The driver ignored the signal and accelerated, driving through a red light and committing numerous traffic violations.

At some point in the city, the vehicle stopped and the driver reversed, striking the motorcycle of the police officer who was following him. The traffic officer was slightly injured. The officer responded by firing three times at the vehicle's tyres, but the driver managed to escape.

The injured officer was transferred to the city hospital, received medical care and was discharged.

Through the investigation that followed, the authorities gathered information that led to a 19-year-old suspect. A warrant was issued against him.

On the evening of the following day, at approximately 11:15, police officers located him near a double-cabin vehicle outside his house. The youth attempted to flee, but was immobilised and arrested on the basis of the warrant.

He was taken to Limassol CID and remanded in custody. The charges he faces include dangerous driving, failure to obey a police signal, attempted causing of serious injury and other offences.

The vehicle was seized as evidence. CID investigations are continuing.
