Eleven arrests and hundreds of charges in night-time police operations

Eleven people were arrested on Sunday night into Monday during organised police operations across all districts of Cyprus, according to Politis. The operations form part of enhanced measures to prevent and suppress crime.

Officers focused on critical points in urban areas, carrying out patrols and checks on persons, vehicles and premises. The aim was to prevent serious offences and maintain public order.

The offences for which the eleven arrests were made include illegal residence on the territory of the Republic of Cyprus, carrying a knife, illegal possession of an offensive weapon, drunkenness and causing nuisance, burglary and theft, causing serious bodily harm, and assault causing bodily harm.

During the night, a total of 857 vehicles and 1,078 persons were checked, whilst 30 inspections of premises were carried out.

The number of traffic charges was particularly high, reaching 426 in total. Of these, 254 concerned exceeding the speed limit — an offence that continues to be recorded with high frequency during night-time checks. Meanwhile, 14 traffic violation cases are under investigation and 15 vehicles were seized.

In checks for driving under the influence of alcohol, 120 tests were carried out, resulting in three charges. In addition, eight preliminary drug tests were conducted, with two drivers testing positive.

Police announced that targeted preventive operations on a nationwide basis will continue, with emphasis on both addressing serious crime and identifying dangerous driving behaviour.
