Police presence and action were intensified last night across the island, with organised patrols conducted at critical points in urban areas.

Five individuals were taken into custody by the prosecuting authorities following mass checks carried out during evening hours in cities and communities across the island. Those arrested are accused of possession of prohibited substances, violations of the Road Traffic Code and illegal residence in the country.

Information released to the public by the Police headquarters shows that 698 vehicles and 985 individuals—drivers and passengers—were checked. Additionally, 55 searches were conducted in shops and other premises, resulting in 9 summonses.

With regard to road safety, Traffic police officers recorded 301 violations, of which 90 were for driving above the speed limit. In 460 alcohol tests, 37 drivers were found to have levels exceeding the legal limit. Furthermore, out of 11 random checks for drug use, half and more tested positive—specifically 5.

Finally, the authorities removed 26 vehicles from circulation.
