Arrests in Paphos over alleged contract killing

Five people were remanded in custody in Paphos on Friday as part of an investigation into an alleged contract killing plot, bringing the total number of those arrested to eight, Cyprus Mail reported.

The five — aged 21, 22 (two people), 25 and 28 — were arrested during a coordinated police operation in Paphos district. Police officers stopped a vehicle in which the suspects were travelling and during a search found a pistol, two knives, gloves, masks and three mobile phones, which were seized.

At their residences in Paphos, authorities seized an additional eight mobile phones, cash totalling $1,400, documents, notes and other evidence. According to police, arrest warrants were issued against them following the assessment of evidence and other material gathered during the investigation.

The five arrested individuals are expected to appear before a court for a remand hearing. Earlier, three people aged 33, 34 and 35 had been arrested in operations in Larnaca and Famagusta districts and were remanded in custody for eight days.

The case began after Cypriot authorities received information through Europol from Danish services regarding alleged plans to commit murders in Cyprus for payment. The case concerns suspicion of conspiracy to commit manslaughter and participation in a criminal organisation.

A special investigative team from the central police headquarters is continuing the investigation in cooperation with Europol and law enforcement authorities from other countries.
