A court in Larnaca has ordered the eight-day remand in custody of a young man from Bangladesh who is alleged to have killed a fellow national, a student, following a verbal altercation.

A court in Larnaca has ordered the eight-day remand in custody of a 22-year-old man from Bangladesh who is accused of murdering his compatriot Shahruar Ahmed Emon. The victim, also 22 years old, had been missing since the afternoon of 12 June, when he left his home in Oroklini to go to his new job at a factory in the Kofinou area.
According to reports in the newspaper Politis, the arrested man allegedly confessed to the act to interrogators. According to what he stated, he had met Emon on a bus a few days before the incident. During their conversation, the student allegedly insulted him, telling him that he was poor and that he had entered the free areas via the occupied territories. The suspect claimed that he understood the victim came from a wealthy family.
He therefore decided to set a trap to eliminate him and demand a ransom from his relatives. He confessed that on the night Emon disappeared, he stabbed him in the neck and back and then strangled him with a piece of his clothing until he died.
He subsequently hid the body under straw and grass, took the victim's mobile phone and sent messages to his father, who was in Greece, demanding 35,000 euros for the release of his son. The body was discovered on Sunday afternoon in an advanced state of decomposition, near the Migrant Reception Centre in Kofinou.
The accused surrendered to authorities the knife he had used, as well as the victim's personal belongings. The prosecuting authorities believe that financial motives lay behind the crime, with the perpetrator hoping for substantial monetary gain. The suspect's confession facilitates the investigation, as he appears to have acted alone without accomplices.
Following the completion of interrogations, the 22-year-old is expected to be referred to the Court of Assize, facing a life sentence for wilful homicide. Close associates and fellow students of Emon are expressing their grief and anger on social media, calling for justice to be served.
