The disappearance of a 22-year-old student from Bangladesh, who had been missing in Cyprus since 12 June, came to a shocking conclusion. His body was discovered in a field in the Kofinou area of Larnaca, approximately half a kilometre from the migrant reception centre.
The corpse was in an advanced state of decomposition and had been covered with grass. A forensic examination revealed blade wounds to the neck and back, with signs of manual strangulation.
The unfortunate young man had told flatmates in Oroklini that he would be going to a factory in the Kofinou area for the first time. He disappeared from that afternoon. That same evening, an unknown person contacted his father, who was in Greece, demanding ransom for his release.
Posts circulated on social media asking relatives for 10,000 euros on Sunday and 25,000 euros on Monday. The messages contained threats that if the authorities were informed, the young man would never return.
Officers from the Larnaca TAE police unit managed to identify a suspect, a 22-year-old countryman of the victim, who was living illegally on the island. The young man initially denied any involvement, but during interrogation broke down and admitted that he had killed the student.
According to what he stated, they had met on a bus and he claimed that he had been assaulted by the victim. Five days later, he went to Oroklini, picked up the 22-year-old, and drove him to Kofinou, where he killed him and hastily buried him. He then attempted to extort money from the family.
The perpetrator indicated to police the knife used in the crime and the location where he had hidden the victim's personal belongings. The case is now being investigated as intentional homicide with financial motives.
