Political clash over criminal investigators in "Mafia State" case
Open conflict has erupted between AKEL and the government regarding the selection of individuals who will conduct criminal investigations into the conclusions of the Anti-Corruption Authority in the "Mafia State" case.
The opposition party, in a statement, accuses the government of either failing to understand or pretending not to understand the scale of the problem. It assigns responsibility to the President of the Republic, arguing that instead of ensuring an impartial investigation, his actions raise further questions and reinforce the impression that a cover-up is being attempted.
AKEL specifically refers to the resignation of one of the investigators due to reactions regarding a conflict of interest, as well as to the appointment of his replacement, who appears as legal representative of a businessman in a separate case involving illegal wiretapping in Greece. According to the party, these developments exacerbate the credibility crisis.
The government spokesperson responded that it is unfortunate that the AKEL leadership seeks to exploit politically a legal process before it even begins. He also described it as paradoxical that individuals who previously accused independent investigators of exceeding their powers now present themselves as defenders of institutional order.
The government spokesperson emphasised that legal proceedings do not function on voices, insinuations and conclusions that have already been drawn. He stressed that the position of the executive branch is clear: full investigation without interference, without compromise and without shadows, with absolute respect for the presumption of innocence.
