Strong demands for the resignation of the Attorney General and his deputy have emerged in Cyprus following the publication of findings by the Anti-Corruption Authority. The report concerns cases that have been characterised as "mafia state", triggering reactions from multiple political parties and the general public.
AKEL, the Volt movement, as well as MPs from other formations, including Chryssis Pantelides from DIKO, have called for the immediate departure of Giorgos Savvides and Savvas Angelides from their positions. The pressure extends to social media, where thousands of users are expressing their anger.
The two legal officials took up their duties during the presidency of Nicos Anastasiades. According to analysis by Philenews, their connection to the former President raises serious questions about their impartiality in investigating cases that concern him.
The findings of the Nicolatou Committee on the naturalisation programme and governmental practices formed an important part of the investigation. Critics argue that the heads of the Legal Service for a number of years avoided investigating complaints against Anastasiades, despite the wealth of evidence in circulation.
The admission by the officials themselves that their relationship with the former President does not allow them to handle the report confirms, according to many, the concerns that had been expressed since 2020. Their remaining in office is considered to burden the Prosecutorial Council as well, whose members are administratively answerable to them.
The issue highlights questions of corruption, the intertwining of political power with justice institutions, and possible oversights in organised crime cases. The political forces calling for resignations emphasise that restoring public confidence in institutions is a priority that transcends party divisions.
