57-year-old father remanded in custody for murder of community leader in Cyprus
A 57-year-old man, a former elected official in a municipality in Messara, will remain detained in the central prison following a decision by a court council. The man is accused of moral complicity in the murder of Alexandros Daskalakis, 49, president of the Apesokario community, who lost his life last March.
According to reports, the elderly man is the father of one of two people who had already been previously sent to prison. His 32-year-old son and a 69-year-old worker, who was employed at a livestock facility in the family circle, are being held as the principal perpetrators. The incident had initially been recorded as a traffic accident.
The prosecutor and the investigating magistrate had expressed different views on whether the 57-year-old should be detained. Due to the disagreement, the matter was referred to a court council, while the accused remained under house arrest.
The relevant decision was issued on Monday and became known subsequently. On the basis of its contents, the father was ultimately taken into custody.
