Occupation authorities arrested a 77-year-old Greek Cypriot on 1 June when he attempted to cross the Ledra Street checkpoint into the occupied areas. According to Politis, an arrest warrant was outstanding against him for the theft of a mobile telephone at a casino within the walls of Nicosia.
The incident in question allegedly took place on 4 May, when the 77-year-old removed a mobile telephone from another person inside a casino. The act was recorded by security cameras; however, he was not immediately located, as he had returned to the free areas. This information is reported by the Turkish Cypriot newspaper Halkin Sesi in today's edition.
Before the occupation "court", the 77-year-old is said to have admitted that he removed the telephone, noting that he had left it in his vehicle. A relative subsequently handed it over to the authorities.
Because he does not have "legal status" in the occupied areas, he was ordered to be remanded in custody for a period not exceeding seven days, pending completion of the proceedings.
