Two young people arrested in Limassol for possession of opiate substances
A police operation in Limassol resulted in the arrest of two individuals, aged 23 and 21, for possession of dried poppy seed pods. The authorities are investigating the emergence of a new type of narcotic on the island.
Two young people arrested in Limassol for possession of opiate substances
Nearly two and a half kilograms of opiate narcotics were discovered in Limassol following an operation by police officers from the Drug Enforcement Service. The narcotics were found in the form of dried seed pods from the poppy plant.
Officers from the Drug Enforcement Service spotted a 23-year-old walking along a street in the city. A check of his bag revealed two plastic packages containing dried poppy seed pods, weighing 418 grams. The young man was arrested immediately.
Subsequently, the authorities searched his home in Limassol. There they found a 21-year-old. Inside a cardboard box were eight additional plastic packages containing dried poppy seed pods, weighing 1,682 grams. The second young man was also arrested on the spot. Additional items were seized from the residence as evidence.
Both are now being held under a court warrant. The Drug Enforcement Service's investigations are continuing.
In a separate operation carried out yesterday jointly with the Customs Department, a 35-year-old man and a 31-year-old woman were arrested for a similar matter. According to the Police, this is the first time that the import of such large quantities of this type of narcotic has been detected in Cyprus.
