Customs officers in cooperation with police from the Public Order Police arrested a driver of a transport company in Nicosia, who was transporting petrol from the occupied areas towards the free areas.

In a coordinated operation conducted by customs officers together with police from the Public Order Police in Nicosia, a driver of a transport company was arrested for illegal fuel trafficking.
The operation took place on 28 May, following the assessment of information, at the premises of a transport company in the capital. During checks, a driver of a small bus was identified who had previously crossed the areas not controlled by the Republic. The man was transferring motor fuel from the vehicle's tank to other vehicles of the same company, using an electronic pump.
The said activity violates the Regulation governing the crossing through the Green Line. The authorities seized the fuel and the vehicle used in the illegal act. The driver, who is also the owner of the company, was detained for flagrant offences.
Subsequently, the suspect was released following an agreement for out-of-court settlement, paying the amount of €18,000. According to an announcement by the customs authorities, the seized fuel will be handed over to a company licensed for recycling or destruction thereof.
