A young traveller from Brazil was arrested by police upon his arrival at Larnaca Airport. The incident occurred yesterday afternoon when, in a joint operation by police and customs officers, they stopped the 28-year-old, who had travelled from his country via the United Kingdom.

The operation was carried out based on information provided by the Drug Enforcement Service. During the search, the suspect allegedly admitted that he had swallowed packages containing narcotic substances. He was immediately transferred to Larnaca General Hospital for medical monitoring.

Doctors established that numerous foreign objects were inside his body. So far he has expelled six oval-shaped packages containing white powder, which was identified as cocaine. The total net weight of the packages amounts to approximately 60 grammes.

According to reports by philenews citing police sources, the young man admitted that he had swallowed dozens of small packages with a total weight of approximately one kilogramme. The arrested person remains in hospital under police guard. Today an order for eight days' remand in custody was issued against him for investigative purposes.

The Drug Enforcement Service in Larnaca is continuing the preliminary investigation.
