Arrests at GSP during Cup final for assault and fireworks
During yesterday's Cup match at the GSP stadium, two people were arrested by prosecuting authorities.
The first suspect is a 31-year-old man who allegedly attacked a person who had been assigned to oversee the event. According to information, at around 5:50 p.m., in the area where fans' vehicles were parked, the suspect threw a lit flare towards the supervisor and then attacked him. Police officers from MMAD who were in the area intervened immediately. Although the 31-year-old resisted, authorities managed to immobilise him and take him into custody. During the investigation carried out immediately afterwards, another flare was found in his possession, which was seized as evidence.
The second suspect is a 19-year-old teenager. Police officers from TAE Nicosia and MMAD conducted a search of his car, which was parked in the same area, and found five fireworks, thirteen firecrackers and eight flares. The youth was arrested at around 8:45 p.m. for unlawful possession of explosive materials.
The 19-year-old was brought before the District Court of the capital, where an order was issued for his four-day remand in custody.
Investigations into both incidents are ongoing by the Strovolos Police Station and TAE Nicosia.
