In the early hours of Friday, police forces in Limassol proceeded to arrest a man aged 54 years. His detention was made on the basis of a European arrest warrant issued by the authorities of Greece, with the aim of enforcing a custodial sentence.
The man had previously been convicted to a five-year sentence by Greek courts for fraud offences. These were committed in the neighbouring country during the years 2008 and 2009. The European arrest warrant was activated in order for the sentence imposed on him to be served.
As reported by the newspaper Philenews, the arrested man is expected to be presented before the judicial authorities of Limassol for the extradition proceedings to Greece to commence.
The case highlights cooperation between the Republic of Cyprus and Greece within the framework of European judicial cooperation for the enforcement of sentences.
