Significant developments are being recorded around the case that began following an investigation by the Independent Anti-Corruption Authority, which was conducted in the wake of the book "Mafia State". The possibility that a foreign independent investigator might take on the criminal investigation is a matter of intense discussion among those with access to proceedings.
According to sources, the prospect of a lawyer from abroad, known in the field of criminal justice, leading the process is being seriously examined. Senior government sources are maintaining a watching brief, but are not ruling out this particular option, as ensuring objectivity is a priority.
The Independent Anti-Corruption Authority's findings identify potential criminal liability for 15 persons, both natural and legal entities, among whom are seven former officials. The document has already been transmitted to the prosecutorial council, which decided not to intervene in the process.
In a statement to journalists yesterday, former President of the Republic Nicos Anastasiades questioned the credibility of the Authority's findings. Mr. Anastasiades argued that Makarios Dryousioti, author of the book, should face charges for false information under Article 22 of the legislative framework governing the Anti-Corruption Authority. This particular offence provides for imprisonment of up to three years and a fine that could reach €50,000.
At the same time, the former President stated his willingness to waive his immunity, in accordance with Article 45 of the Constitution, so that an investigation could be conducted and the case concluded promptly. He described Dryousioti as an "inventor of stories".
