A man died from injuries sustained after falling from a residential building in Larnaca whilst attempting to escape immigration checks.
Migrant death from balcony fall in Larnaca
A man lost his life in Larnaca when he fell from a considerable height on a residential building during checks by the Immigration Service. The incident occurred yesterday.
The man was one of three who jumped from balconies of a building in an attempt to avoid arrest. He suffered a serious head injury and was hospitalised with traumatic brain injury. Ultimately he did not survive.
The head of the local police, Ioannis Kapnoullás, spoke to state radio. He rejected any suggestion of police violence. As he stated, the operation was carried out in accordance with regulations and with officers in plain clothes.
According to him, the three men jumped from the fourth or fifth floor before the authorities reached the flats. They fell onto balconies of the second floor.
Mr Kapnoullás clarified that the checks were conducted in the corridors of the building, without a warrant, something which is permitted. The officers did not enter any flats or break down doors. He has sent a report of events to the Police Commissioner.
The other two, aged 27 and 38, are being treated out of danger. One will undergo surgery today for an injury to an upper limb.
The victim has not yet been identified. The Commissioner of Administration is investigating whether the building is fit for purpose.
