A tragic accident occurred on Sunday evening at a hotel in Chloraka in Paphos province. A three-year-old boy, who had arrived on the island the same day with his family for a holiday, fell from a fourth-floor window and succumbed to his injuries.
According to initial information from local police, at the time of the incident the child was in his father's arms as they waited for a lift together with the boy's grandfather. The boy appears to have slipped from his father's hands and fell through an open window located next to where they were standing.
The child was taken by ambulance to Paphos hospital, where doctors confirmed his death. An autopsy that was carried out showed that the death was caused by serious head trauma and multiple injuries throughout the body and internal organs as a result of the fall.
Several hours after the incident, police arrested the 37-year-old British father of the child. The Paphos District Court issued a decision on Monday for his temporary detention for eight days. The hearing was interrupted for a short time due to the condition of the arrested man, who was visibly distressed.
The man is accused of manslaughter through negligence due to reckless, careless or dangerous conduct, as well as neglecting obligations arising from exercising care for another person.
Local police announced that the investigation is continuing. Five people have given statements so far. As was emphasised, the fate of the arrested British man at this stage remains uncertain.
Representatives of the British diplomatic service commented on the incident, stating that they are "aware" of the event and confirming that the family has been placed under the protection of consular support.
