A British Bases Court has sentenced a 28-year-old Greek Cypriot to nearly three years' imprisonment for possession of 23 kilogrammes of cannabis with intent to supply.

A 28-year-old man has been sentenced to nearly three years' imprisonment by the British Bases court following his conviction on charges related to narcotic substances. The judgment was announced on 17 June.
The defendant, a member of the Greek Cypriot community, was arrested the previous December. Specifically, he was located and arrested inside his vehicle in the Trakhoni area, as part of a joint operation between the security forces of the British Bases and the anti-narcotics service of the Republic of Cyprus.
The court determined that the 28-year-old possessed the cannabis with the intention of supplying it to other persons. The quantity that was seized amounted to 23 kilogrammes.
Following the announcement of the sentence, the man was transferred directly to the Central Prison of the British Bases in Dhekelia to serve his sentence.
Police officer Melina Papagrigoriu, after the conclusion of the trial, stated that drug trafficking creates serious problems in societies. As she noted, this judgment confirms the commitment of the authorities to effectively address crime linked to narcotics.
