Police: First seizure of large quantity of kif in Cyprus – Two people detained
In an operation conducted this morning on agricultural land in the free Famagusta region, police officers from the anti-drug unit in cooperation with personnel from the anti-drug authority identified and seized a significant quantity of kif. The search was carried out in the presence of the 49-year-old property owner.
During the inspection, the authorities found a 28-year-old inside the premises. Upon examination, it was established that he was residing in the Republic without valid documents, a fact for which he was placed in detention. Subsequently, inside a plastic tool box, the authorities discovered a large quantity of kif — a fine crystalline substance derived from cannabis flowers. This marks the first time it has been found on the island in such large volumes.
The 49-year-old owner and the 28-year-old foreign national were arrested for flagrant criminal offences. Both are expected to be brought before the Famagusta District Court tomorrow in order for a detention warrant to be issued against them.
In recent years, Cyprus has observed an increased appearance of new types of drugs. Recent operations with large seizures have highlighted the effectiveness of the prosecuting authorities in the fight against the illegal distribution and use of prohibited substances. The investigations of the anti-drug unit in Famagusta are continuing.
