Two defendants charged with torture, abduction and involvement in a criminal organisation appeared before the permanent criminal court in Larnaca.
Pyla torture case returns to court
Two defendants in the Pyla torture case appeared on Monday before the permanent criminal court in Larnaca, according to Cyprus Mail. One sought additional time to raise the issue of "abusive prosecution", while the other contested the continuation of his detention.
The case concerns charges of torture, abduction and involvement in a criminal organisation, in relation to incidents that occurred in Larnaca during the summer of 2025. The two defendants, aged 48 and 27, face a total of 16 joint charges.
The 48-year-old claimed through his legal representatives that he is being prosecuted in two separate cases on the basis of the same testimony. The court set 4 June for discussion of the related application. The 27-year-old separately contested the lawfulness of his detention and the court scheduled Wednesday to examine the matter.
Charges against both include conspiracy to commit a felony, involvement in a criminal organisation, abduction, causing serious bodily harm, assault, threats and degrading treatment. They also face charges of illegal possession and transfer of a firearm.
According to the authorities, numerous victims were abducted and subjected to assaults at a property in Pyla. The prosecutors stated to the court that investigators recovered video material and digital evidence during the investigation.
The police announced that the 48-year-old was arrested on 6 February whilst already in detention in connection with a separate investigation into a shooting and incident that took place in Larnaca on 17 January. During the searches, officers seized documents and other material for forensic examination from a property linked to the suspect.
Six victims have been identified so far: three Cypriot nationals, one Indian national, one Arab national and a sixth person, possibly a European national, who has not yet been identified. Some of the victims are currently outside Cyprus.
Investigators also confirmed that another suspect is being sought based on an arrest warrant issued by the court. The investigation continues with the aim of identifying additional individuals alleged to be involved in incidents captured in the video evidence material.
