The head of the Cypriot police force, Themistos Arnaouti, announced that the force remains awaiting the Cabinet's decision on the appointment of independent investigators who will examine the report into the corruption scandal surrounding the book "Mafia State".
During a media briefing at police headquarters, which was organised to present the findings of the Drug Enforcement Unit for the first half of the current year, Mr Arnaouti referred to developments in this particular case.
The head of the force stated that the police authorities have already received the report, accompanying documents and the list of evidence that was transmitted through the Office of the Attorney General. This material is now available to those responsible to proceed with the process.
Mr Arnaouti emphasised that, given the government's intention to appoint specialist criminal investigators, the police force is in a state of readiness and is prepared to provide any necessary assistance.
At the same time, the head clarified that a concurrent investigation cannot be conducted by the force, stressing that the further course of action depends solely on decisions by the Cabinet.
"We are awaiting guidance on the next steps," he noted, adding that the police's contribution would be decisive.
