Zampounis case: Sokpa remanded in custody in occupied areas – trial by "military court"

Alexei Sokpa, 43, suspected of the murder of Vangelis Zampounis, is being held in the occupied areas and will be tried by a "military court" of the pseudostate.

Sokpa remanded in custody in occupied areas – uncertain whether he will be handed over to the Republic

A Turkish Cypriot news outlet reports the remand in custody of 43-year-old Alexei Sokpa, who is wanted by Greek authorities for the murder of Vangelis Zampounis. According to Philenews, the Turkish Cypriot website Kıbrıs Türk Haber reported Sokpa's appearance before a pseudo-court the previous day.

According to the report, a case was filed against the 43-year-old before a "military court" of the pseudostate. The charges concern offences under the so-called "military law": "Violation of Military Forbidden Zone First Degree", "Illegal Entry", "Abandonment of the Territory of the 'TRNC' Without Permission" and "Illegal Residence in the 'TRNC'".

Sokpa has been in the occupied areas since 31 July 2025, and is said to have used uncontrolled crossing points to pass into the free Republic of Cyprus. In videos published in Greece, he appears to be one of those who carried out the execution of Zampounis, and is presented as a member of the group of "Edik".

A request has already been submitted, through the bicommunal group, for the extradition of the wanted man to the Republic of Cyprus through the United Nations, as Philenews had reported earlier. However, it is unclear whether the "authorities" of the pseudostate intend to hand him over to the Republic or whether they will choose to extradite him to Turkey.
