A court on Saturday remanded in custody a 35-year-old woman suspected of killing her newborn child in Kynšperok nad Ohří in the Sokolov district. The accused, born in 1990, admitted during questioning on Thursday that she gave birth in secret and subsequently killed the child.
The incident occurred in the second half of May in a family home where the woman lived with her partner. She gave birth to the child herself, without medical assistance. She then wrapped the newborn in a plastic bag, which she had prepared in advance, and carried it to a garden nook under wooden planks.
The case came to light on Wednesday evening when a child's hand was discovered on Mining Street near one of the houses. The woman's dog had been carrying it until it was found by his mother, the accused's mother-in-law. According to autopsy results, the body had not been dismembered by the mother as initially appeared. The dismemberment was caused by wild animals and her dog, which had torn, dragged and consumed the body.
Detectives immediately launched an extensive operation. Dozens of police officers searched bushes, rubbish bins and other locations in the area. They searched for other parts of the body and traces leading to the perpetrator. Suspicion soon fell on a woman living nearby, whose neighbours had observed a pregnancy that suddenly disappeared.
Police detained the woman on Thursday afternoon, conducted a house search and charged her with murder. The state prosecutor submitted a motion for remand in custody, which the court approved on Saturday following a two-hour hearing. If convicted, the accused faces between fifteen and twenty years in prison or an exceptional sentence.
On Friday morning, the woman's partner, who has a history of drug use, attempted to take his own life. He survived. Source: Krimi Plzeň
