The Ústí Regional Court has sentenced a nineteen-year-old mother to twelve years in prison after she abandoned her newly born son among rubbish at the Střekov housing estate last autumn.

The Ústí Regional Court on Wednesday imposed a twelve-year prison sentence on a nineteen-year-old woman who left her newly born son in a container at the Střekov housing estate in Ústí nad Labem last autumn. The verdict has not yet become final. The case was reported by Novinky.cz.
The boy, who was born alive and healthy, was found by a random passer-by. Thanks to their quick response, the infant's life was saved. Police detained the mother shortly afterwards.
Presiding judge Martin Parolek, in explaining the sentence, emphasised that the accused partially admitted to her actions. The court simultaneously rejected the argument that she acted as a result of post-natal stress. According to his words, she was troubled rather by the idea that she would have to look after the child. "She prioritised herself, viewing the offspring as a complication," he stated during the proceedings.
In addition to the twelve-year sentence, the convicted woman must pay her son compensation of 340,000 crowns for non-material damages caused.
Prosecutor Vladimír Jan originally sought ten years, despite acknowledging expert assessments that indicated a personality disorder in the accused and reduced capacity to perceive the consequences of her actions. Nevertheless, he was convinced that the mother intentionally placed her offspring among the rubbish and knew that outdoor temperatures posed a risk of death to him.
The defence counsel immediately appealed against the court's decision. For attempted murder, the young woman faced up to twenty years in prison.
