The State Prosecutor's Office in the Olomouc region has received a proposal from investigators to prosecute a nineteen-year-old man for murder. If convicted, the perpetrator faces ten to eighteen years in prison. Police spokesman Libor Hejtman reported on the developments in the case. Details were published by the portal Novinky.cz.

The incident occurred on 24 October last year in Hranice in the Přerov district. After 11 p.m., a patrol arrived in response to a report of the death of a 44-year-old man. Relatives at the scene initially claimed that the victim had injured himself. However, police soon determined that the relatives' account did not add up, and requested specialists from the general crime department to attend the scene.

Investigators from the regional headquarters took the case under their control. Interviews revealed that a quarrel had broken out between the stepson and his stepfather. The aggressive behaviour of the 44-year-old man escalated into attacks on other household members. The nineteen-year-old suspect, in a sudden outburst of emotion, grabbed cutlery that guests had at hand for cutting the birthday cake and thrust it from behind between his stepfather's shoulder blades.

The injury proved fatal. Despite immediate intervention by paramedics, the man could not be saved. Police arrested the suspected teenager in the flat where the celebration was taking place. Both protagonists of the tragedy are foreign nationals with valid residence permits in the Czech Republic.

According to investigators, the deceased had a tendency towards excessive alcohol consumption and treated his family in a tyrannical manner. On the day of the incident, he was heavily intoxicated and was verbally attacking those present in a vulgar manner.

"He confessed. He was in shock. He was concerned about the safety of his grandmother, his mother and his own," Jan Lisický from Olomouc police summarised the suspect's attitude. The accused is being prosecuted whilst free.
