Appeal in case of imprisonment and rape of woman in Siřemi goes to high court
Forty-four-year-old Karel Novák, whom the Ústí Regional Court sent to prison for 15 years for a series of brutal attacks on a woman in Siřemi in the Louny district, has appealed against the length of the sentence. The case will now be heard by the Prague High Court.
Novák admitted his guilt already in May before the regional court, so the appeal concerns only the second part of the ruling. The court imposed a cumulative sentence on him, which also includes his earlier rape of other victims. When announcing the verdict, both the judge and the state prosecutor emphasised that the case, by its duration and intensity of abuse, significantly exceeded typical criminal cases. It was also exceptional that other persons participated in the imprisonment.
Three accomplices who were aware of the final imprisonment were also given custodial sentences by the court: six years for two women and five and a half years for a man. All four defendants admitted their guilt before the court and expressed remorse for their actions.
In addition to the prison sentence, the main perpetrator was ordered to undergo protective sexological treatment in institutional form. Expert assessments found that Novák suffers from sexual deviation and sadism and poses a danger to society.
The victim's representative Martina Houžvová told journalists after the verdict was announced that the victim would carry the trauma of the experienced events for the rest of her life. "It will be difficult for her to share this with anyone. I do not know of anyone who has experienced anything like this. It is something that, even for us who encounter evil, is absolutely exceptional, incomprehensible," she said.
