The District Court in Zlín began examining on Thursday the case of a man's death in February in a construction hut in Provodov in the Zlín region. The thirty-two-year-old defendant faces up to twenty years in prison for murder.
The incident occurred on 5 February. Firefighters initially responded to a routine fire, but during its suppression they found a charred body inside the burnt structure. Detectives took over the investigation and later apprehended the garden owner.
According to police spokesperson Šárka Trnková, state prosecutors initially classified the act as grievous bodily harm resulting in death. They later reclassified it as murder committed with premeditation or prior consideration.
The defendant was in a state of severe intoxication when he deliberately ignited the pyrotechnics and threw them into the wooden shelter, according to court spokesperson Klára Belková. He knew that his acquaintance, who was also intoxicated and unable to help himself, was inside.
The perpetrator then fled the scene. "He made no effort to address the situation, nor did he provide assistance, and reported the fire with a significant time delay," Belková stated. Meanwhile, the fire spread uncontrollably, the hut was completely destroyed, and the victim died from carbon monoxide poisoning.
