An appellate court upheld a twelve-year prison sentence for a 72-year-old man who killed a woman with a single revolver shot. The motive was alleged theft of money.
Court upheld 12-year sentence for murder: pensioner shot acquaintance in Přelouč
The Prague High Court on Tuesday upheld a sentence of twelve years imprisonment for Miloš Kubovčík (72). The former marksman and pensioner was found guilty of premeditated murder of a woman he had known for thirteen years.
The incident occurred last November in Přelouč. Kubovčík was convinced that his acquaintance had been stealing money from him for a long time. On the day of the tragedy, he quarrelled with her. He then went to the bedroom to fetch his legally registered firearm and selected a revolver with the most powerful calibre.
He returned to the kitchen, where the woman was preparing food. Without any warning, he aimed at her head and fired. The bullet passed through her head, entering through the right side of her face and exiting on the left side of her neck below her ear. The woman died instantly.
The perpetrator, who was confined to a wheelchair at the time of the incident, left the scene. He did not inform police of the act. However, after his apprehension, he confessed to the crime. At the district court's main hearing, he refused to testify, claiming he had no recollection.
The appellate proceedings concerned primarily the amount of compensation for the surviving daughter. She originally demanded one million crowns. The district court awarded her half, but the high court reduced the amount to 350,000. It justified this with the distant relationship between mother and daughter – the girl had not lived with her since the age of six, had not paid her maintenance, and was not existentially dependent on her. The remainder of the claim must be pursued in civil proceedings.
The murder sentence remained unchanged.
