Karviná Mayor Wolf Denies Allegations in Corruption Football Case
Jan Wolf, mayor of the city of Karviná and key figure in the local football club, has commented for the first time on the allegations that police have brought against him. It concerns a large-scale corruption and gambling fraud in football, in which he is being prosecuted as the only politician.
"I have not bribed anyone, there is no evidence against me," Wolf said in his statement, which was obtained by the iDNES.cz server. Police are prosecuting him as part of an investigation into match-fixing in football.
In the background of the case, there is also the question of the impartiality of investigators. One of the police officers working on the case is allegedly a coach at rival Baník Ostrava.
Wolf is, in addition to his political position, also a central figure in the Karviná football club. More detailed information about the specific role he was supposed to play in the gambling network is not yet known.
