A sixteen-year-old suspect turned himself in to police in Göttingen on early Tuesday evening. The teenager, who had previously been sought across Europe, is suspected of shooting a police officer last Saturday. He appeared with his lawyer and was subsequently brought before a judge, according to NDR.
The officer was seriously injured in the incident and remains in intensive care. His condition is, however, stable, a spokesman for the public prosecutor's office said on Tuesday.
The incident occurred on Saturday evening on Weender Straße. It was triggered by a violent dispute between two large families from Kosovo, who had frequently come to the attention of police in the past. The teenager is suspected of firing several shots, with one projectile hitting the police officer.
The investigation is being conducted by the Braunschweig public prosecutor's office, which is also home to the central unit for combating organised crime. A murder commission has been established to clarify the exact sequence of events, background and possible motives.
On Monday, specialist units searched three residential buildings in Göttingen and Gieboldehausen. Several mobile phones were seized in the process.
