Ukrainian accused of espionage on defence information from Germany

A Ukrainian national was arrested on Thursday, 22 July, in Brandenburg on suspicion of espionage on behalf of Russia, according to an announcement from the Federal Prosecutor's Office reported by cnn.gr.

The accused is alleged to have collected and transmitted to a Russian intelligence service information of military interest concerning the production of armoured vehicles, ammunition and explosives. Also in the sights were personnel and military facilities in regions contributing to the protection of NATO's eastern flank.

According to the Federal Prosecutor's Office, the suspect had maintained contact since July 2025 with a Russian intelligence service through an intermediary. He exploited contacts within the European defence industry to obtain sensitive data — some of which was publicly accessible, while other material was acquired through targeted personal contacts.

The Federal Prosecutor's Office is competent for matters of national security in which there is suspicion of espionage on behalf of a foreign power. The present case unfolds at a time when German security services are expressing increasing concern over alleged Russian espionage and sabotage activities in the country.

Investigations in the case have not yet been concluded. The exact parameters of the alleged information gathering, as well as any other persons potentially involved, require clarification. The accused is presumed innocent until a final conviction is handed down.
