A 17-year-old girl suspected of murdering a same-age classmate in Germany has been arrested in Klaipėda, Lithuania, following months-long investigations. The incident occurred on 14 January in Kastrop-Rauxel, North Rhine-Westphalia.
According to German investigators, both teenagers met at an abandoned house. The young woman allegedly deliberately stabbed the boy in the neck with a knife, fatally wounding him. She initially claimed she had been defending herself against an attack. Initial traces at the crime scene appeared to partially confirm this account. She was preliminarily arrested, but was later released.
However, during subsequent analysis of her mobile telephone, prosecutors found evidence suggesting there was no case of self-defence. The investigations revealed that the 17-year-old had searched the internet for information on how to kill a person. Additionally, she allegedly lured the boy to the crime scene by promising him a surprise.
After the incident, the suspect went into hiding. The prosecution issued an international arrest warrant. The victim's mother offered a reward of €20,000 for information leading to the teenager's arrest. According to the family's lawyer, a witness came forward and provided information about the suspect's possible whereabouts in Lithuania.
Officers from the State Criminal Police of North Rhine-Westphalia investigated together with the Federal Criminal Police Office and Lithuanian authorities to determine the suspect's location. She was arrested in Klaipėda and is currently in pre-trial detention. She is to be extradited to Germany on the basis of a European arrest warrant.
The German prosecution has not yet disclosed the exact motives for the crime. According to reports from German media, brief intimate relations between the two teenagers may have been the trigger. Investigations are ongoing.
