Missing for 19 Years: Police Find Remains of Kerstin Lee Langley

Bones Identified in Upper Palatinate

Investigators have discovered human bones in Berg bei Neumarkt that, following forensic examination, "with high probability" belong to Kerstin Lee Langley. According to spiegel.de, the then 39-year-old was reported missing by her brother in the summer of 2007.

Langley lived in Regensburg. Her former partner stated that she had separated from him and had driven away with an old friend in a dark car with Deggendorf licence plates. The case was featured twice in the television programme "Aktenzeichen XY ... ungelöst" (File XY ... Unsolved). The Bavarian State Criminal Police Office offered a 10,000 euro reward for decisive leads.

Suspect Leads Investigators to Dig Site

In early 2025, a suspect came forward to police and later gave a comprehensive confession. According to investigators, she is an ex-partner of Langley's former partner. She led investigators to the excavation site, where bones were discovered in early October. Notably: police had already searched just a few hundred metres away in 2012 without finding remains.

Three Suspects – One Already Deceased

According to police, investigators are pursuing three suspects. Langley's former partner is already deceased. The second suspect is in investigative custody and remains silent on the allegations. Chief Public Prosecutor Thomas Rauscher stated that the suspect initially attempted to strangle Langley. When that failed, the flatmate – the third suspect – took over.

Investigators believe that all three "agreed to jointly kill Langley", according to Rauscher. They held grudges against the victim for different reasons. An arrest warrant for the most recently named suspect was issued on Monday afternoon.

Further Search Operations Planned

Police will search for further remains in Sulzbach-Rosenberg, amongst other locations – the suspect had also pointed to a possible discovery site there. The search there has so far been unsuccessful. Only six bones have been excavated to date. "I think we have an enormous opportunity to finally clarify the crime after such a long time," said Rauscher.

The presumption of innocence applies to all suspects.
