20-year-old in Altenkirchen acquitted of attempted murder
A young man from the Altenkirchen region has been acquitted by the Koblenz Regional Court of the charge of attempted manslaughter. The judges found insufficient evidence of intent to kill. Nevertheless, the 20-year-old must serve a prison sentence.
The incident occurred at the end of August 2025 at the old railway station in Altenkirchen. The defendant and a companion had previously consumed alcohol and taken drugs together. During the course of the evening, a dispute developed with a 30-year-old man. The young defendant then drew a flick knife and wounded his opponent with a stab wound 15 centimetres deep.
The victim had to be airlifted by rescue helicopter to a clinic and underwent emergency surgery. The defendant admitted to the knife wound at the start of the trial. However, he claimed to have acted in self-defence because he felt threatened. The court accepted this account and acquitted him of attempted manslaughter.
For possession of the illegal flick knife, the Regional Court imposed a sentence. This was combined with two other prison sentences of the young man. In total, this resulted in a single youth sentence of two years and six months.
