In Uerdingen, a district of Krefeld, a 41-year-old man died during a police operation on Saturday evening. Officers were dispatched to a residential property at around 20:00 after reports came in of a physical altercation in a family household.

According to investigations by the Westdeutsche Zeitung, the deceased and his relatives had previously been involved in a violent confrontation in which a female person sustained minor injuries.

When the two patrol officers arrived at the scene, the 41-year-old allegedly immediately attacked them whilst brandishing a stabbing implement. One of the police officers responded by drawing his firearm and discharged a shot. The man sustained life-threatening injuries and died shortly afterwards in a medical facility.

The officers deployed at the scene remained physically unharmed. As the local police are themselves involved in the incident, the Gelsenkirchen station is conducting the investigation to ensure impartiality. Together with the competent public prosecution office in Krefeld, the circumstances of the fatal use of firearms are being clarified.
