In Bischofswerda in Bautzen district, a 66-year-old man was observed by a passer-by on Thursday morning attempting to remove the German flag from the town hall. When the witness confronted the senior, he is said to have attacked him. The citizen remained unharmed in the attack.
According to police information, the pensioner wanted to tear the flag from the flagpole. In addition, he is said to have shouted slogans during the incident that are directed against the liberal democratic constitutional order.
Due to the political motivation of the act, state security has opened an investigation. The officers are now examining what prompted the man to commit the act. He is being investigated for attempted theft, assault, and the use of symbols of unconstitutional and terrorist organisations.
