Bavarian police confiscated approximately €850,000 in cash from a 33-year-old Czech driver. The man had no driving licence and could not explain the source of the money.

Officers of the Bavarian police stopped a 33-year-old Czech driver on Friday, 12 June, during a check near the Czech border at Waidhaus. In the boot of his black Mercedes, they found approximately €850,000 in cash. The sum was confiscated on suspicion of money laundering. This was reported by Aktuálně.cz.
The man possessed neither a valid driving licence nor the appropriate authorisation. During the vehicle search, he stated that the boot contained approximately €700,000. However, the actual sum was approximately €850,000.
The Czech customs administration points out on its website that when transporting cash exceeding €15,000 within the European Union, the driver must provide customs officers with information about the amount and purpose during checks. This regulation serves to combat money laundering and the financing of terrorism. Anyone wishing to export cash of more than €10,000 from the EU must mandatorily declare this amount.
