Confession letter emerges after rocket attack on Jänschwalde power station
Following an attack on a substation in Brandenburg, a confession letter has emerged. Police are examining its authenticity.

Following the attack on the substation at Jänschwalde coal-fired power station in southern Brandenburg, a confession letter has emerged, according to 20 Minuten. The Brandenburg Police Directorate in Potsdam confirmed on Thursday that it had been informed of the letter. "The authenticity of the letter is the subject of further investigation and cannot be confirmed or denied at this time," the authority said. No further details would be provided "for tactical reasons in the investigation".
According to the taz, an individual confesses in the letter to the act and describes in detail the homemade rockets used. "Electricity generation from fossil fuels is a crime that brings about unspeakable suffering," the newspaper quotes from the document. The author wished to "avert or reduce" this suffering.
The handwritten letter was sent, according to the postmark, from North Rhine-Westphalia. The taz met only another family member at the stated address, who said he knew nothing of the act or the man's current whereabouts — however, he recognised the handwriting of a relative.
The attack took place on Tuesday. According to grid operator 50Hertz, "homemade flying objects resembling commercial fireworks rockets" were used. Brandenburg's Interior Minister Jan Redmann (CDU) stated that an attempt had been made to establish a connection between the high-voltage power line and the ground to trigger a short circuit. Police are investigating, among other things, on suspicion of terrorism.
