The arrest of Robert Bąkiewicz and several members of Ruch Obrony Granic (ROG) in Berlin has triggered a wave of hate comments and death threats directed at Berlin Police. By Wednesday afternoon, nearly 6,000 comments regarding the incident had accumulated on the authority's social media channels.
The incident occurred on Tuesday, 16 June, near the Federal Chancellery at a memorial stone for Polish victims of German occupation during the Second World War. A group of approximately 15 people led by Bąkiewicz intended to demonstrate with banners and a large wooden cross, but did not have police authorisation.
As the group proceeded towards the monument anyway, scuffles broke out with deployed officers. During this, ROG members repeatedly shouted "Gestapo!" at the officers. Six people were temporarily arrested and released after police measures were concluded.
According to police spokesman Florian Nath, a considerable portion of the comments originated from far-right circles. Several officers involved in the operation received death threats. The state security department at the State Criminal Police Office has opened several investigations.
Reactions on social networks are divided. While some users speak of "shame", others thanked the police for intervening against "primitive hooligans". Representatives of the German Polish community also expressed criticism of the action and warned against political instrumentalisation.
