The hearing concerning the abduction of Christina Block's youngest sons descended into severe turbulence on day 56. At the centre was the testimony of David Barkay, who describes himself as the mastermind of the operation in which the children are alleged to have been abducted from Denmark on New Year's Eve 2023/24.
The defence lawyers had hoped that the witness examination would provide clarity. However, Barkay remained vague and evasive in his statements. As questions became more detailed, his uncertainty grew. Eventually, the witness told the court that he was certain of nothing except his own name – the events lay too far in the past.
The defence lawyers found themselves facing an increasingly frustrated course of proceedings. Barkay's own legal representative, Dr Björn Kruse, repeatedly intervened in the questioning and heightened the already tense atmosphere. Judge Isabel Hildebrandt had considerable difficulty controlling the course of the hearing. She is working under time pressure, as she wishes to conclude the trial by August.
The confrontation became particularly heated between Dr Marko Voß, who represents the Blocks' family lawyer, and Gerd Uecker. The latter represents co-plaintiff Stephan Hensel, but appears to be unfamiliar with the conventions of criminal proceedings as a family lawyer. The presiding judge had to reject his questions several times and reformulate them. A colleague eventually advised Uecker to avoid suggestive formulations.
Voß also complained about Hensel's behaviour on the co-plaintiff's bench. He is said to have repeatedly made loud comments during the hearing. Hensel responded with an outburst of anger and shouted into the microphone that these were slanders. His presence and his grin also caused displeasure among the other parties to the proceedings.
