In Stade, a town approximately 40 kilometres west of Hamburg, a man shot six people in a social advice centre. The police confirmed that five victims died at the scene, while another person later succumbed to their injuries in hospital. Among the deceased are four women and two men, all adults.
The suspected shooter, a 45-year-old man with Turkish family roots, is from the Hannover region. He was arrested shortly after the act. Two further persons were also taken into custody, including the 34-year-old mother of a three-month-old child. The reasons for their arrest remained unclear initially.
The suspect was known to the authorities, but had not previously been considered dangerous. He did not possess a legal weapon. How he obtained the pistol remains unclear.
According to initial findings, a dispute over custody of the baby played a central role. The perpetrator had come to the facility that day for a conversation about the care of his daughter. There he suddenly drew a firearm and opened fire on those present. The officers emphasised that it was not an exchange of fire – the attacker shot without any resistance.
The toddler remained unharmed. According to media reports, it had previously been removed from the parental household and was only permitted to visit the mother under conditions in a protected residential group.
The broadcasters NDR and WDR reported that the perpetrator could belong to a known large family clan. Investigators on the scene did not wish to confirm this and referred to a lack of evidence.
The officers rule out political or extremist motives and are proceeding on the assumption of a personal conflict. Further details were expected at an evening press conference.
