A brutal crime occurred on Monday at a social facility in Stade, Lower Saxony, in which six people lost their lives. The act took place in a building on Dankersstraße that provides temporary accommodation for pregnant women and young mothers with their children.
According to police, five adults – four women and one man – were killed on the spot. Another adult succumbed to their serious injuries in hospital during the course of the day. There were also several wounded, some with serious injuries, according to news agency dpa.
Investigators arrested one main suspect. Two further people were also taken into custody as there is suspicion they were involved in the act. According to initial police findings, one of those arrested is said to have fired the fatal shots.
The authorities emphasised that there was no further danger to the general public. Officials initially made no statement about a possible motive.
Daniela Behrens, the Interior Minister of the state of Lower Saxony, announced at a press conference that investigators are working at full speed on the investigation. She spoke of an "extremely violent crime from behind" and suggested that apparently a custody dispute could be in the background.
Eyewitnesses reported a massive police presence and numerous rescue vehicles in the residential area. A resident who lives near the crime scene told news agency AP that he had heard detonations and seen police cordon off the area immediately.
Stade is a medium-sized city with around 50,000 residents, located approximately 40 kilometres west of the Hanseatic city of Hamburg. Germany has strict firearms regulations in international comparison. However, serious violent acts involving firearms occur repeatedly.
