As the Süddeutsche Zeitung reports, the Federal Intelligence Service (BND) infiltrated the Eichmann trial in Jerusalem in 1961 with an agent. The man's central task: to keep Adenauer's Chancellor of the Office Hans Globke and further Nazi collaborators out of the ongoing proceedings.
On the eve of the trial's opening, Federal Chancellor Konrad Adenauer addressed the population on television. "In the German body politic, in the moral life of the German people, there is today no National Socialism, no National Socialist sentiment. We have become a constitutional state," he explained. At the same time, Adenauer expressed the wish "that in this trial the full truth comes to light and that justice is exercised."
The now-published findings place this public stance in a different light: whilst Adenauer invoked transparency and justice, the BND under Reinhard Gehlen was apparently already occupied with obscuring incriminating connections to Nazi perpetrators.
