Two Bulgarian nationals are being held in custody pending investigation following an arson attack on defence firms in Munich. According to Bild, the domestic intelligence service had been warned about the attack as early as June.
Domestic intelligence service knew of planned attack on defence company from June onwards
A 38-year-old Bulgarian man and a 28-year-old Bulgarian woman are being held in custody pending investigation following an arson attack on defence firms in Munich. The Bavarian State Criminal Police Office (LKA) placed the two suspects in separate prisons. The Central Unit for Combating Extremism and Terrorism (ZET) at the Munich General Prosecutor's Office has accused them of property damage and attempted arson.
According to merkur.de, the attack has a longer history. According to Bild, which cites its own reporters, the domestic intelligence service had possessed information as early as June about a planned attack on German defence companies commissioned by Russian intelligence services. The Munich police and the LKA are said to have been informed several weeks earlier, and appropriate defensive measures are said to have been initiated.
The two suspects were arrested on Thursday, 3 July, at around 2 a.m. at an Esso petrol station on the Innsbrucker Ring – approximately two hours after the attack. They were sitting in a white BMW. A security guard had previously observed the vehicle at the scene of the crime when an incendiary device exploded.
The attack took place near Mühldorfstraße, where the defence companies Helsing and Rohde & Schwarz are based. According to merkur.de, the target is said to have been drone manufacturer Helsing, which supplies combat drones to Ukraine.
