Special operations officers have located the prime suspect neighbour in the case of a murdered married couple in Bremen-Vegesack. The arrest took place on Sunday evening in a maize field near Schwanewede in the Lower Saxony district of Osterholz, just a few kilometres from the scene of the crime.
Officers found the 22-year-old with serious injuries that were acutely life-threatening. They immediately began resuscitation measures and were able to stabilise the man. Under guard, emergency services subsequently took him to a clinic. The cause of the injuries remains unclear.
The apprehension was made possible by information from the public and close coordination between Bremen and Lower Saxony police.
The crime occurred on Friday at around 2 p.m. A 40-year-old man was still walking around the district of Fähr-Lobbendorf with fatal cutting and stabbing injuries, but collapsed on site and died. Emergency responders later discovered the body of his 35-year-old wife in the basement of an apartment building. The couple's two-year-old child remained uninjured and is now with the grandparents.
The suspect was already known to security authorities. In April, he had come to attention with an air pistol. When officers arrived, he fled through a window and hid in bushes. With a rifle-type weapon with a knife attached to its end, he made stabbing motions towards police officers. They deployed a taser and took him for psychiatric evaluation. As neither a mental illness nor danger to others was established, he had to be released on the same day.
