Officers from Bavarian police found approximately €850,000 in cash in the boot of a 33-year-old Czech's car during a check at the Waidhaus border crossing. The man was unable to provide a credible explanation for the source of the money.

During a vehicle check near the Bavarian border town of Waidhaus, German police officers secured a large sum of cash on Friday. In the boot of a black Mercedes, they found approximately €850,000 in cash on a 33-year-old Czech national.
The driver stated that the amount was around €700,000. However, the officers estimated the sum at approximately €850,000, as reported by the broadcaster Bavarian Radio (BR). As the man could not provide a credible explanation for the source and intended use of the money, the cash was seized.
Police initiated an investigation on suspicion of money laundering, according to the Süddeutsche Zeitung. Since 2017, investigators and courts in Germany have been able to more easily seize assets of unclear or criminal origin. Anyone who finds cash or gold in their possession must prove its lawful acquisition.
Additionally, an investigation was opened against the man for driving without a valid driving licence, as BR added. Should he be able to prove the legal origin of the money, he can have it returned.
