German federal prosecutors have brought charges of war crimes and sabotage against a suspect linked to the destruction of the Nord Stream gas pipelines in the Baltic Sea. The prosecution alleges that the man carried out the pipeline attacks on behalf of Ukraine.
Investigators believe the accused was involved in the detonation of the undersea pipelines that took place in September 2022. The attacks caused massive gas leaks in waters off Denmark and Sweden. The pipelines, which connected Russia to Germany, were severely damaged by several explosions.
German authorities worked with international partners in their investigation. The charge marks a significant step in one of the largest infrastructure attacks in recent European history.
